Register NOW for the 2025 Round Robin here.
How the Round Robin Works: The Round Robin is a collaborative quilting project where you start a quilt with a center block, which will be added to by 5 other quilters in either a Medallion or Improvisational style. Every 6 weeks, on Saturdays at 10 a.m., you’ll pass your quilt and materials to the next quilter. We meet on the porch in front of Bay Quilts at 5327 Jacuzzi St., Suite 3-C, Richmond. After the fifth exchange, you’ll receive your finished quilt top!
Medallion Style: A Medallion quilt begins with a center block (pieced or whole cloth), typically square or rectangular, measuring between 10 to 12 inches on each side. Each quilter adds borders (3” to 8” wide) on all four sides. Borders may include traditional blocks with symmetry and color coordination, or incorporate scrappy fabrics, self-designed blocks, wholecloth fabrics, or liberated designs.
Improvisational Style: An Improvisational quilt starts with a center piece that is an undefined, whimsical shape—pieced or whole cloth—covering approximately 10 to 12 inches. Subsequent quilters are free to add fabric wherever they like, and may even slice, rearrange, or reshape existing work to create a truly unique design.
Why Join the Round Robin? This is a great opportunity to explore new techniques, experiment with fabrics and colors outside your usual style, and expand your quilting repertoire. It's a fun way to challenge yourself and push your creative boundaries!
Fabric & Instructions: You may provide fabrics for your team to use and challenge them to stick to your choices, or leave the decision to them. If you're using a specific fabric (e.g., a black background), please supply it. All fabrics must be 100% cotton, and the work must be machine sewn (no embellishments).
On the first exchange, Saturday, March 15th, bring your starter block, along with a small notebook that includes your instructions and preferences (e.g., maximum size, color choices, design ideas). Include any fabric you’d like to contribute. Your materials will go in a large blue zippered bag, labeled with your name, a list of exchange dates, and your team members contact information.
Exchange Dates: Exchanges will take place at Bay Quilts on the following dates: the first exchange will be on March 15. Future exchange dates are April 26, June 7, July 19, August 30 and October 11.. If you're unable to attend an exchange, contact Mindy ahead of time, and we'll provide alternative options.
