Due to COVID guidelines and restrictions for meetings of large groups, our much enjoyed and well-attended Educational Sessions, where we had a chance to visit with each other prior to listening to speakers and examine their work up close, have been cancelled for the foreseeable future. However, we have been offering these lectures virtually.
EBHQ’s Educational Sessions are held on the last Monday of the month, excluding July and December. Our May session is moved up a week because of Memorial Day. On nine Monday evenings we host a featured speaker from the quilting world and for the 10th session, in November, EBHQ members are the stars in our annual Show & Tell night.
Members begin to gather in the atrium of the church at 6:30 to greet one another, view Opportunity quilts from visiting guilds, pick up pamphlets describing regional quilting events, buy tickets for our door prizes, check out two EBHQ quilts in the Fireside room and the church office, munch on homemade cookies, or check out books from our extensive library.
Finished quilts for the Deanna Dean Community Quilt Project are collected then. Pre-cut quilt-top kits to sew, pinned quilt sandwiches to machine quilt, or quilts to hand bind can be picked up at their table too. Occasionally pre-cut pillow case kits are available.
At 7:30 p.m. the crowd moves into the chapel, where Guild announcements are made, followed by our featured speaker from the quilting world.
Special once-a-year events
Show & Tell evening in November is eagerly anticipated by all. This splendid event starts in the atrium, where quilters who are going to display the piece they have worked on all year, receive a number. Once inside, they sit in numerical order and await their turn on stage. With the proud quilter standing nearby, Show & Tell crew members hold high each creation to great acclaim and appreciation — and sometimes even rowdiness.
Kiss It Goodbye is a favorite. Members bring fabric from their stash that they are willing to “kiss goodbye.” Fabric is piled high onto multiple long tables, and anyone can choose as much fabric as they’d like to take home and add to their stash. A fabric feeding frenzy!
At our Annual Book Sale, books, magazines, and more, that have been donated by members in the past year are offered at rock bottom prices. All money collected is donated to the Guild. On multiple long tables, boxes and boxes of paperbacks, hard-bound books, magazine sets, and quilt patterns are organized by subject. The reading frenzy begins!
We hold a Silent Auction fund raiser, on odd years, when we do not have a VIC quilt show. Members provide the all goods, which do not have to be quilting related. Again, items are displayed on long tables, each accompanied by a Bid Sheet. The highest bidder when time is called at 7:30 wins the opportunity to purchase the item. All money collected is donated to the Guild.
On VIC Quilt Show years the atrium is hopping for many months in advance, as we strive to get all our ducks in a row for the show. Opportunity Quilt raffle tickets are sold, as well as advance tickets to VIC. When available, our Opportunity Quilts are displayed. Completed Fabric Postcards, sold during VIC as a fund raiser, are collected. Kits to make postcards are handed out. Photos and fabric swatches of quilts entered in VIC are collected. As the show date gets close, information packets for quilts entered and accepted in the show are distributed.
