  • Sept. 6, 2010 - Share Your New Quilts: Call for Entries Don't miss this chance to share your new quilts with the public. EBHQ will be exhibiting 30-40 small to medium quilts at the Alameda County Administration Building in downtown Oakland. The exhibit, hosted by the Alameda County Arts Commission, will be on view October 25th through January 13th. This show is a wonderful way to share our work with the public and promote quilting.

Quilts will hang in two well-lit, secure areas with high traffic, on the fifth floor outside the Board of Supervisors Offices and in the Department of Taxation lobby on the first floor. The exhibit is open to the public during normal working hours Monday through Friday. The County building is located at 1221 Oak Street, near the Oakland Museum and three blocks from Lake Merritt BART.

We are seeking a wide range of styles and dimensions. Quilts may be small or up to 65" tall. They may be dropped off at both September Drop-in Meetings (9/14 and 9/18), and at the September 27th General Meeting. Download the entry form from the EBHQ website for all details. Completed entry forms and waivers must accompany all quilts.

Volunteers are needed to organize, install and deinstall the exhibit. If you are interested in curating opportunities, please contact Jennie Alexich, jalexich@encircle.com, or call 707-849-263

  • June 4 - Focused-Interest Mini Groups

If you are interested in joining a mini group, read on for information on two ways to do just that. While most mini groups are not focused on any one aspect of quilting, it is certainly possible to have a group with a specific interest, such as working with silk, hand dying fabric, wearables, hand quilting, etc. I am happy to help anyone interested in such a group to find other like-minded souls. If you are interested in a silk-oriented group, there will be a sign-up sheet at the September Play-Date, or you can e-mail me your information (see below for how to reach me).

If you are interested in a hand dyeing group, or a hand quilting group, or if you have in mind another focus for a group, let me know. I will collect the names and when I have enough for a group (say, 6 names) I will send all of you everyone's information and you can contact one another and make your own arrangements to get together. As more names come in I will send them to the appropriate group. THE INFORMATION I WILL NEED IS: the focus of the group you are interested in, your name, phone number and e-mail address.

The second way to join a mini-group is to come to the meeting I am holding at the Saturday Drop-in on September 18 beginning at 11am. This is a ways off, so mark it on your calendar now. There will be reminders in the Knot, at meetings, and on the web. You are welcome at this meeting whether you want a focused or a general interest group. I cannot guarantee a group or groups will form, it depends on how many people show up. The more the merrier, so I hope to see you there.

EBHQ is centered in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area. It was founded in 1978 and has almost 600 members.

The purpose of EBHQ is to preserve and continue the traditions, culture and history of quilting; to promote fellowship among interested persons in all aspects of quilting; to contribute to the knowledge of and to promote appreciation of fine quilts; to sponsor and support quilting activities; to encourage quilt making and collection; and to contribute to the growth of knowledge of quilting techniques, textiles, patterns and quilt makers through educational meetings and travel.

EBHQ provides a wide range of activities for its membership. The monthly meetings feature outstanding speakers from all over the quilting world. Workshops are offered on a variety of quilting topics. Twice a month, members can get together and work on projects at "Drop - Ins." Community Service activities are supported by creating quilts for children in need. EBHQ’s quilt show, Voices in Cloth, is a biennial event with the next show schedule for Spring, 2010.
