August, 2010

  • Jan Krentz
  • Saturday & Monday, August, 28 & 30 — Stone Mosaic 3-D Framed Diamonds (Supply List)

Create a geometric design with depth and dimension. The quilt is pictured on the cover of Jan's book Quick Diamond Quilts and Beyond. The construction method is surprisingly straightforward, and fabric selection is the key to creating dimensional effects. There are two methods of construction for this quilt. You will learn about both methods in class;primary instruction will focus on the easier Faux Diamond technique.

Two-day workshop. Skill level: advanced beginner and above.

September, 2010

  • Marilyn Belford
  • Saturday, Sept 25, & Monday, Sept 27, 2010; — Dealing with faces (Supply List)

This workshop includes demonstrations and hands-on practice of the process Marilyn uses to create realistic portraits in fabric. On Day One, Marilyn will demonstrate how to enhance a photo and turn it into a line drawing using a computer, discuss alternative methods that don't require a computer, and cover what makes a good photo for a fabric portrait. Working with Marilyn's drawings from the kit, you will be guided through the process of transferring designs, cutting, applying and fusing fabrics. In preparation for Day Two, Marilyn will give pointers on threads to bring for threadpainting. On Day Two, students will bring sewing machines and threads, and practice techniques for embellishing and filling in detail. Marilyn will demonstrate threadpainting and students will work on their samples. You will leave this workshop ready to make a beautiful fabric portrait of your own design.

There is a $15 material fee for the kit, which includes a copy of an original photograph, an enhanced & posterized image, a line drawing on paper, an image with all the fabric arranged, ready for threadpainting, graphite paper for image transfer, and a piece of plain muslin. Students will choose from four faces with a variety of facial features, for example eyes, eyes with glasses, smiles with and without teeth, facial hair, etc. Some students may have time to complete multiple sample images by the end of Day Two, so the supply list includes additional materials you will need if you have time to go beyond the portrait in the kit. Bring a zig-zag sewing machine with feed-dogs down capability on Day Two.

October, 2010

  • Thom Atkins
  • Saturday, October 23, — Basic Bead Embroidery Stitches for Quilters

We will take a look at beads, their shapes, varieties of finishes, and their use on quilts to create texture and color changes in the surface. We will learn the basic stitches for applying beads, and what they do to the surface of the quilt, and how the application of beads quilts the surface. This is a process class. The student should have some prior knowledge of hand sewing and hand quilting.

Kit fee $30 and bring a basic hand sewing kit.

Monday, October 25, — Bezels, Edges and Fringes
We will learn to create beaded bezels around cabochons (flat-backed stones, usually not faceted) to attach them to a quilt. We will look at various borders and edges and their variations. We will learn to do fringes (of beads) and the variations thereof. Most of the techniques involved require some knowledge of basic "bead embroidery for quilters." This is a process and technique class. Students will have a sampler to serve as a road map for future projects when you finish.

Kit fee $30 and bring a basic hand sewing kit.
